“A treatment method or an educational method that will work for one child may not work for another child. The one common denominator for all of the young children is that early intervention does work, and it seems to improve the prognosis."
-Temple Grandin
There are many different treatment interventions that can be used to help students and individuals with autism spectrum disorder become more successful. Just like the quote above, one method may work for one student with ASD, but may not work as well for the next. With that being said there are some universal treatment interventions that can help most individuals on the spectrum. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a method of teaching that is based on the work on Skinner and works to help reduce unwanted behaviors and increase wanted behaviors. ABA is structured using the antecedent, behavior, consequence (ABC) model. Applied Behavior Analysis is a treatment intervention that will be commonly linked to helping with behavior with individuals with ASD. Another treatment intervention you will see is Speech and Language therapy. This can be done at school and privately to help improve language and communication. This can help with social skills training too. Also, sensory integration/occupational therapy are treatment interventions to help individuals on the spectrum deal with the over stimulation that comes with the disorder. Medication is another treatment intervention that needs to be discussed with a clinician. Finding the right treatment intervention that is right for the specific individual with ASD is the key. Below you will find more information and sources that can help with treatment interventions for individuals on the spectrum.
